Leadership & Members

CWL Executive

Karen Felker

President

As a proud third-generation member of the CWL I am in my 39th year of service. I am a strong believer that together with my CWL sisters we have the potential to bring more Catholic women together to strengthen our faith and lead as servants.

The Foundation for Ministry Course offered by the Diocese of Hamilton changed my life and was instrumental in my discernment to expand my servant leadership and spiritual growth. I have always taken an active role in my parish, serving currently as Minister of the Word and Minister of Holy Communion, and most recently honored as the President of the Catholic Women’s League.

I have a B.A. in Labour Studies and Human Resource and Business Administration diplomas all from McMaster University. My recent acceptance into the year-long Catholic Women’s Leadership Program at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa excites and motivates me! When I thought I was taking early retirement from my corporate management and finance career, God had other plans. I am currently part of the Bishop’s Chancery team fulltime in Stewardship and Human Resources and, along with my husband, manage the St. Vincent de Paul Store on Barton Street. I am blessed to see Jesus in the lives of all those I have the privilege to serve there.

I have been married for seven years and currently have five adult children and seven grand children. I am the co-pilot on airplane and motorcycle trips and am an avid Hamilton TigerCat football fan. Oskee-wee-wee!

Cathy Sorbara

Vice President

With a start of kindergarten in the Diocese building when it was a school, then a move to our lovely round school adjacent to the property as Christ the King Elementary, and a full swoop back to the Diocese building as St. Mary’s Catholic High School, I have a solid connection to the parish.  I have been a lifelong parishioner of the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, a CWL member at least 25yrs and a Minister of the Word for 30yrs. I served in several capacities on the CWL before starting my family many moons ago and my passion for the parish led me back to this wonderful Executive as Community Chair last term.  With an unparalleled parishioner-centered focus, the Cathedral Basilica has been dedicated to its family.  The CWL has always been at the forefront of this family with spirituality and connectedness.  I am blessed to serve as this term’s Vice President and work together with you in faith.

I love to bake and cook! Have two beautiful adult sons! I love adventures outdoors hiking and travelling! With an educational background in Information Technology, work experience in that realm, as well as, 20 years experience with the REALTORS Association of Hamilton-Burlington, my flair for life in this community led my career to follow that dream, and I am a Hamilton Realtor.  Most importantly, proudly born and raised in Hamilton, I am excited to be a part of this beautiful parish, the Mother Church, as Bishop Crosby says.  Let me put that passion to work for you and guide you on our spiritual journey.

Emidia Gallo

Social Justice Chair

I have been part of the Catholic Women’s League for over 5 years now and for the last 2 years serving as Chair of Communications on the executive team.  I am very honoured to have been once again chosen to serve the team, this time as Chair of Social Justice.

I have a BA in Food and Nutrition from Toronto Metropolitan University, and currently work at Joseph Brant hospital as a Diet Technician/Food Service Supervisor. My husband Lidio and I have been married for 17 years, and have a 10 year old son and 6 year old daughter. On my days off I enjoy cooking, baking, and taking hikes with my family as well as exercising and Latin dancing with my husband.

I have been a parishioner at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King for over 25 years and have recently been seeing a steady growth in the number of young families in the parish. I would love to help engage more of the young women to join the CWL to help it flourish and protect its future.

Lina Gallo

Faith Chair

My name is Angelina (Lina) Gallo. I am married to my incredibly amazing husband, Nat, for 50 years (WOW) and we have 2 remarkable sons married to brilliant, sensational wives (now our daughters).  Michael, and his wife Madonna, and Lidio and his wife Emidia, have blessed us with 5 awesomely tremendous grandchildren, Natalie, Julianna, Kateri, Gianmarco and Donnilia. One of our most exciting experiences was this past summer when all 11 of us went to Italy for 3 weeks to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary – an unforgettable, and inspiring trip of a lifetime!!! I thank our loving God every day for all the blessings He has bestowed on us. Along with family and faith, I am extremely humbled and proud to have a fantastic Italian- Canadian background enriching my life with amazing traditions, celebrations, foods and so much more. Hopefully we are passing these on to our children.

As an almost life-long member of the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King and my husband a life-long member, we are very active in our parish and our faith. In the past, we have co-ordinated the Renew and Pre-marriage programs, facilitated the baptism preparation and currently I am an Extra Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist and my husband and son Lidio, are Ministers of the Word. We are extremely humbled, proud and blessed to be part of such a vibrant, nurturing and welcoming community where our spiritual needs are always fostered and met!   I have been a member of the CWL for the past 22 years and Nat is a member of the Knights of Columbus where he has served as State Deputy of Ontario, Vice Supreme Master, Supreme Director and assistant to the Supreme Knight for Canadian affairs.

On a professional level, after 21 years with the Catholic School Board as teacher and Department Head and 13 years as Director of the OECTA / OCSTA A.Q. Courses in Religious Education, I accepted positions at Brock and Redeemer Universities lecturing in Religious Education in Catholic Schools. What a blessing and joy it is work with young adults in their faith formation!

Martine Holjevac

Treasurer

For more than a decade, I’ve been a faithful member of the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. Every visit fills me with admiration for its stunning beauty and spiritual atmosphere. I have been serving as a Minister of the Word since I started attending, and I now hold the position of Chair on the Parish Pastoral Council.

I joined the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) two years ago and recently became the treasurer. I am eager to contribute to this group that does so much for our parish.

My husband, John and I have shared our lives together for over 42 years. We raised two amazing sons, Alex and Mark, and are blessed with two delightful grandchildren, Luca and Elio. We have a loyal old dog, Annie and a gentle horse named Kate.

I love spending time outdoors, especially in cold weather. My hobbies include skiing, playing hockey and horseback riding.

A wise priest once shared with me the importance of sharing the Catholic faith in various ways, including through actions when words fall short. I strive to embody this advice in my daily life.

Andrea Matecki

Service Chair

Andrea has a Certificate of Corporate Social Responsibility, is a Queen’s Commerce Alumni and works as a CPA, CA in the not-for-profit industry. She is known as “Auntie Andy” to her godchildren and enjoys spending time with loved ones, being outdoors, exercising, reading, and travelling. Andrea was born in Oakville and attended Catholic school in Burlington. She is a third generation Canadian from Italian and Polish immigrant grandparents. In 2019, Andrea did a mission-trip to Guatemala, moved to Hamilton, and became a parishioner of the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. She joined the CWL thereafter and serves as a Minster of the Word.

Georgina Minnes

Secretary

I am extremely grateful to my Portuguese parents who started attending the Cathedral around 1970 so that my 4 sisters and I could understand the Mass. The Cathedral Basilica has been like a second home to me!

Soon after graduating from Trent University (Peterborough, ON) in Canadian History, I began my 30+ year career with the City of Hamilton (working in museums, cemeteries, and health). I retired in 2021.

In 1991, I married Tom (at the Cathedral), and we soon started our own family (Victoria – married to Jonathan – and David). While our children were starting their adolescent years, I became a member of the CWL (eventually being elected to Executive positions – including President).

I love my faith, my family and having fun (specifically: cycling, walking, hiking, and gardening).

Christine Bruno

Past President

My name is Christine Bruno. My faith has been the most powerful constant in my life. I have been attending mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King since 1978 when I was a student at McMaster University.

Joe and I were married at the Cathedral Basilica in 1981. We have 2 children, Alexandra and Michael, who became altar servers the moment they turned 9 till the time they left to attend University.

I have been an interpreter/translator and caregiver for over 50 years, a Minister of the Word at the Cathedral Basilica for over 40 years, and I have served on different Boards and Councils for a variety of non-profit organizations in Milton over a span of 30 years.

In my spare time, I worked as a legal assistant and a private tutor.

Most recently, it was my pleasure and honour to serve as your CWL Organizational Chair (2020), President (2022), and now Past President (2024).

Presently, I look forward to re-entering retirement so I may enjoy my love of studying languages, travelling, swimming, hiking and playing badminton.

I was born on a beautiful island called Sri Lanka, also known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean. My early education was done in Colombo, the capital city, at a private English boarding school for girls. I was a good student and completed my Bachelor of Arts degree. Before long I was employed by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Refinery Division in the Personnel Administration Department. I met my husband there. He worked in the Refinery’s Operations Department. A few years later we got married and had two kids, a boy and a girl. When my daughter was 2 years old, my sister who was a Canadian citizen, sponsored my family and we migrated to scenic Calgary, Alberta.

I started my first job in Canada with the Young Offenders Center in Edmonton, Alberta as an Administrative Assistant. After graduating from a 2-year Information Management and Library Technology Diploma program, I held library technician and librarian positions. I worked at St. Francis of Assisi Elementary/Junior High and St. Pius Elementary School as a Library Technician. I worked 7 years from 2003-2009. At St. Alphonsus Elementary/Junior High School before retiring.

I was a reader at St. Dominic Savio Parish and was a member of the Catholic Women’s League in Edmonton, Alberta. I was also a reader at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King in Hamilton, and I am a member of the Catholic Women’s League in Hamilton.

I like gardening, swimming, walking, cooking, sewing, travelling, reading and doing yoga. While living in Alberta, I watched hockey games and became an Oilers fan. I still watch hockey games and cheer for the Oilers. I like New Zealand and have travelled there three times.

I’m blessed with 3 grandchildren – one girl and 2 boys. I love talking with them and listening to them. I enjoy seeing them, going places with them and doing activities with them.

I was born and raised in Hamilton and am a newer parishioner to Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. In 2022, a life changing event happened, and I found myself walking back through the doors of the Cathedral. Fr. Dave was getting ready to lead the stations, and I was ready to surrender to the Lord.

I am the oldest of three. My father is deaf, and my mother is hard-of-hearing. You could say I was their ears and voice growing up. My brother and sister have blessed me with four amazing nieces and three nephews. Although they live outside of Hamilton, I take my role as auntie, Godmother, and sponsor very seriously, trying to provide spiritual guidance and lead by example.

We moved around a lot when I was younger. St. Eugene’s, St. Charles (deaf mass) Our Lady of Lourdes, Sts. Peter and Paul, and Regina Mundi, were all parishes we attended as a family. I was active in the school choir and youth group.  When I moved back to Hamilton from the Kawartha’s, I settled in the Locke Street area and attended St. Joseph’s. It was here I first joined the CWL serving for a year. Since then, I have crossed the Kirkendall/Strathcona border and happily call CBCTK home.

I am actually very shy, introverted and live with social and general anxiety. I love being outdoors, surrounded by God’s creation. I studied and worked in the field of environmental and natural resources in my 20’s. In my 30’s I worked at the Spectator and today, I work in an administrative capacity at McMaster University.

My mother and I usually attend Saturday Mass and sit on the right side. Thank you for the warm welcome. I look forward to growing in faith, service, and social justice with you.

One of six children, I was born and raised in Ireland and emigrated to British Columbia in 1980 to work as a volunteer teacher in Fort St. John in the Diocese of Prince George.

Years later I met Lorenzo in Terrace and we were married there in 1995.  We were blessed with two sons, Giovanni and Ezra and moved to Hamilton, Lorenzo’s hometown, in 1999. Our commitment to the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King has been steadfast since our arrival.

As the boys were growing up, I took on the responsibility of homeschooling them which afforded them a solid education and a firm foundation in the Catholic faith.

Proclaiming the Word as a lector in our parish is a ministry in which I have been privileged to serve for many years.

I’ve been a member of the CWL for more than eighteen years and during that time I have served on the executive for four years as spiritual coordinator and secretary.  I look forward to being an active member of the CWL for many years to come.

Grace Carreiro

CWL Member

I am the fourth of five daughters and a near-lifetime member of the Cathedral Basilica parish. Incidentally, my first job was working in the Rectory!

While studying History in University, I enjoyed a summer job as a costumed interpreter at Dundurn Castle, creating so many fond memories.  I like to think I reside between two of my favourite buildings in the city: Dundurn Castle and the Cathedral Basilica.

I have a passion for travel, although I have not traveled as extensively nor as frequently as I would like.  During a trip to Italy in 2001, I was fortunate to attend the Papal Audience and met (Saint) Pope John Paul II!  Ask me about it and I’ll show you the photo . 😊

Following in my parents’ example of service, I am a longstanding member of the Cathedral Basilica choir, and currently also serve as a Minister of the Word.

As a member of the Catholic Women’s League, I have been honoured to serve in various capacities, including President and Hamilton Regional Chair.

It is so wonderful to see so many fresh faces at our meetings and within our Executive!

Margaret Carreiro

CWL Member

Member since 1999. I am the second daughter of five (yes, no brothers) born to David and Judith Carreiro. They immigrated from São Miguel, Açores and made Hamilton their home. We girls attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Elementary School and Cathedral Girls Catholic High School in Hamilton. The Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King has been our parish ever since our eldest sister prepared to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist in 1970. I would go on to graduate from the University of Waterloo with Honours in Fine Arts.

After graduation, I began working with Lewiscraft, an Arts and Crafts store, working my way up to Manager. I enjoyed working and learning more crafts; however, in the first year, while I was part time, I also became acquainted with L’Arche, a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life together. After four years with Lewiscraft, my heart found it’s way back to L’Arche where I stayed as an Assistant, House Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator before burning out 6 years later. I returned four or so years after that as a promotional educator for L’Arche but that wasn’t my forte so I resigned only to return as a Board Member, which I stayed the maximum nine years. Members of L’Arche will always have a very big part of my heart.

In 1998, I found the love of my life, David E. Smith. Oh there are times I wonder why he’s the love of my life but he’s been good for me and to me. We married on September 4, 1999. This year, we celebrate our 25th Anniversary and were so happy to be able to praise God with over 350 other couples on May 26 at the Wedding Anniversary Mass. It was such a joyful Mass. We look forward to going on the Quebec Pilgrimage with the Diocese of Hamilton, which, by the way, is where I have worked for the past 20 years. I began with the Marriage Tribunal for the first 10 years, then with the Liturgy Office for the next 4 years and have been with the Finance and Administration Office since 2016. I managed to complete a Certificate of Integrated Accounting during these last 6 years from Mohawk College.

I count myself very blessed. In September 2023, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and, in October, had surgery followed by radiation in January. All has gone well. Thank God! Although I continue with treatment, I am cancer free. My blessings extend to Dundas where I live in a very beautiful neighbourhood with a loving husband and four adorable cats. I have my sisters and brothers-in-law and family close by except for the eldest in Australia but she’s a Zoom call away. I am employed and enjoy working. David and I also participate in various Catholic organizations, which brings me great pleasure. Besides being a member of CWL for the past 25 years, we were active with the Cursillo Movement, we are members of the Serra Club of Hamilton of which I have been President for the last 8 years, and we are involved in TOOL (Teams of Our Lady) a Catholic approach to helping married couples grow faithfully together. I thank God for all He has given to us throughout the years.

Call me Tess but my baptismal name is Teresita. Miss Aromin as my former students in high school called me.

I married my husband Edward Ellis in the Philippines on April 7, 1984, and then immigrated to Canada that same year. We just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary.

Life in Canada went so fast raising my two boys as I was a stay-at-home Mom for 10 years. I went back to school at Mohawk College and graduated with a diploma Pharmacy Tech. I was employed at the Hamilton General Hospital in the Pharmacy Dept (retiring in 2015).

I am very active in my apostolic work (1998 to present) mainly visiting and praying with sick people. We formed a prayer group and prayed together with the rosary and other Marian devotions in each member’s house.

I was a communion minister in the church and for shut-ins, I was appointed by Fr. Dave Wilhelm in 1995 and decided to retire in 2021.

Now I have to babysit my 92-year-old mother that lives with us and take her to church each Sunday.

After 40 years as a parishioner at the Cathedral, I decided to join the CWL. I hope I can catch up with the young minds. I will try my best to come up to your expectations for the organization.

Greetings,

I am a life-long member of the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. In fact I attended elementary school at Basilica School, now the Chancery Office. I have wonderful memories of those days. After graduating from Cathedral Girls’ High School, I attended McMaster and The University of Toronto.

I am a retired teacher. I worked for the HWCDSB for 34 years. I taught French, English and Religion at the secondary level. Would you believe I taught a few of our fellow CWL members! Later in my career, I was a teacher-librarian. I loved working with young people.

I was honoured to be Eucharistic Minister for many years but unfortunately I had to give it up for health reasons.

In retirement I started taking painting lessons, pursuing my passion for art. I work mainly in acrylics though I have tried oil, Chinese brush and watercolour. I prefer acrylics because they are more forgiving. I also take cardio classes and I started a book club. In addition, I volunteered at a seniors’ centre.

I have been married for 27 years to my wonderful husband, Manuel Cacoilo. We got married later in life so unfortunately we do not have children; however, we have many nieces and nephews who are close to us and we are blessed to be involved in their lives. My husband is Portuguese and we quite often travel to Portugal to visit my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. It is a beautiful country and the shrine at Fatima provides a very moving spiritual experience which is difficult to describe. We love theatre, music and Nature.

When my husband and I moved to Lynden 17 years ago, we could have chosen a closer parish but we decided to stay at the Cathedral because it felt like home. It is wonderful connecting with fellow parishioners and meeting new ones because of membership in the CWL.

My name is Dineli Jayatunge

I was born and raised here in this beautiful city of Hamilton. It is also an honor to be an altar server of many years here at Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King.

I’m the youngest of my two older brothers and occasionally enjoy video gaming with them. I’m also the daughter of Sadhna Jayatunge who is also a CWL member and reads at church.

I’m currently beginning my second year at McMaster University for Nursing. In my spare time I enjoy dancing, playing piano, and reading. These activities are not only my favorite hobbies but essential for stress relief as well.

One of my dream places to travel to is Japan, and I hope to save up for this trip in the future. I’m also a bit of a sweet tooth (I really liked the macarons at our May meeting).

It’s always lovely meeting and catching up with you all in the CWL!

was born to Jim and Mary (Day) Nicholson on May 7,1951, in Halifax Nova Scotia, the 7th of 8 children and grew up in the small community of Lakeside just outside the city of Halifax. We were surrounded by my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of the family. Lived just one house away from Sacred Heart Parish Church, which we attended faithfully. Right across the road from our school and most of my classmates lived only a few houses away.  An ideal place to grow up.

My mother and I had a great relationship, and I loved listing to her stories of years gone by. The most memorable were of the Halifax Explosion and the loss of her second child. The explosion was caused by the collision of two ships in Halifax harbour, one loaded with munitions, on Dec 6,1917, five months before mother’s birth. At that time her family lived in the city near the harbour. My great uncle Bill’s 3-year-old daughter Helen was lost amid the debris of a shattered city. Months went by before she was found in the care of the sisters of the Contemplative Order of the Good Shepard. They left her there as they had no home themselves and she was safe. They would visit and would take her for outings. Months turned into years. In her teens, she decided to stay with her sisters. I grew up knowing her as Sister Helen and would visit her with mother at the convent in the city. She made a great impression on me. My brother James Michael was born Sept. 26, 1937, but only lived about a month. Mother was devastated, especially learning that he was born healthy but with a blockage in his esophagus he just starved to death. He would be 87 next month.

I was 15 when my parents move us to Granville Centre not far from Annapolis Royal. We made friends quickly. I enjoyed riding and helping to care for the horses with some. Helping our neighbour Mr. Walker with chores for his cows. I’d had an experience with public singing while still in Lakeside when I was about 12ish. In our new community I got involved appearing in variety shows, which lead to meeting others. In early fall, 1969 a guy, Roger Theriault (future husband), came to our house and asked if I’d join a country band, he was part of. I agreed, and we became The Countrymen. This led to the recording of a song written by a local woman (Welcome to Digby Town), a TV appearance for me on a show called Countrytime. By this time Roger and I were engaged and I graduated from high school, June of 1971.

We married May 27, 1972, and my father was too sick to walk me down the aisle, so my oldest brother Bob stepped in. On October 5th of that year my father died from cancer, he was 62. That caused a void in me that I didn’t think would ever be filled. During all this time Sr Helen was still actively remembered. We couldn’t visit as we use to, but mother wrote to her faithfully and would read her return letter to me. The convent in Halifax had closed, and all were moved to the mother house in Windsor, ON. Years later we were invited to Helen’s Diamond Jubilee. 60 years of devotion to Christ, we had to go! She was thrilled and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Three days at a convent in a little house they call The Villa. At the ceremony, the acapella singing of the sisters, I imagined, was like a choir of angels. It was heavenly!

Summer of 1988 my husband of 16 years ran off with another man’s wife! I did give him a second chance, but he did it again. I moved with my girls, Marianne 14, born Oct.10, 1973, and Jennifer, 11 born June 12, 1977, closer to St. Patrick’s Church in Digby, where I threw myself into a wonderful church community singing in the choir, my girls too. Church became my life. As for him and Lora, unfortunately they and her son Craige 18 (a sweet boy) died in their sleep when the house caught fire from a cigarette in the living room. Investigation showed that he fell asleep on the couch while smoking. They had been out to a house party.

Jennifer had moved to Hamilton to be with her daughter’s father. Years later Marianne married a Hamiltonian, and that’s why I’m here. To be with my 2 daughters and granddaughters Olivia and Anita. And after many years of thought I took back my maiden name! I could have given many more details, but there’s just no more room!

I belong to an Italian Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. Our Founder is St. Alfonso Maria Fusco, an Italian diocesan priest. I joined the Congregation at the age of 14 on August 29, 1956. I continued my studies in Rome in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. On 26th June 1960, I received the habit of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. The following year in 1961, I started my novitiate. I was professed in 1965. My first assignment was at the Mother House in Angri, the province of Salarno. After my perpetual profession, I was assigned to a different community in Italy.

In 1967 I was transferred to Hamilton in Canada to help with the new mission, which was then located between Barton and Bay Streets at All Souls Parish. I worked with the pre-school children. At the same time I attended Mohawk College continuing education and obtained a certificate of an assistant teacher. In the same year, we moved up to Mohawk Road at Infant Jesus Childcare Centre.

In 1973 I was assigned in Toronto to help out the ministry of new community at the high school, Dante Alighieri and the pre-school. In that year I attended Humber College and qualified as an ECE educator. I also obtained a special needs teacher certificate.

In 1983, I was sent to a new mission in Jerusalem. After that I went to the Philippines where I spent 15 years and established new communities, schools, formation house, orphanages and vocation animation. Then I went to Korea and Mexico.

In 1996, I returned to Canada in Toronto where I worked at St. Nicholas Di Bari Parish as a Pastoral Assistant and to teach catechism in 4 schools to children and teachers.

After the death of my mother, in 2010, I returned to Hamilton and was assigned to work with Msgr. House at the Cathedral of Christ the King. I like very much the work of the parish, part of the mission of the church and the congregation.

Prior to moving to Hamilton in 2011, my husband Michael and I lived In Timmins.  I was a City Planner.

For more that a decade, we have been parishioners at our beautiful Cathedral.  I have been a member of the CWL for the past 6 years.

I enjoy knitting, quilting, reading and gardening. A monthly book gathering is a special time for me.

We enjoy the many outdoor activities (trails, boating, wineries) as well as indoor activities (concerts, galleries) in the city and nearby communities.

I like to bake too!

Born to Herbert and Jeanne Sullivan on Hamilton Mountain on Nov. 18, 1955, I spent my first 22 years in our beautiful city. I attended Sacred Heart School and parish, then moved on to Cathedral Girls’ High School before continuing to McMaster University, where I received a Bachelor of Commerce degree. I then went to London, Ontario, for the manager trainee program with the Bank of Montreal. It was during this time that I felt God might be calling me to become a Sister with the Sisters of St. Joseph. I often say that if people knew how interesting our lives were, we would not have buildings big enough for all! But, I digress.

As a Sister, I have worked in Human Resources at hospitals in Brantford, Kitchener, and Hamilton. Then I felt God inviting me to join two of my Sisters in ministering in Annotto Bay, St. Mary, Jamaica. We worked there with the Canadian Jesuits, and for my first seven years, I worked with Fr. Martin Royackers, SJ. For unknown reasons, possibly because he stood up for poor farmers or perhaps due to robbery, he was shot and killed as he left the church on June 20, 2001. It was a sad shock for all. After that, I was appointed the Administrator of the Parish by the Archbishop for the next seven years.

Upon returning to Canada, I worked for a private company, Trusted Transitions, which assisted seniors in the moving process. I also served as the Executive Director of the Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada and the Executive Director of the National Association of Vocation/Formation Directors (now called Vocations Canada). Another ministry was as Executive Director of the Hamilton Out of the Cold program, where our 400 volunteers served hot, nutritious meals during the winter to some of Hamilton’s most vulnerable citizens.

In 2016, I was elected to the leadership team of our congregation, the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, and was re-elected in 2021 for a second and last term. As part of a team of five Sisters, we do our best to walk with our 150 Sisters living mainly in London, Hamilton, Peterborough, and Pembroke but also in Yellowknife, Edmonton, Calgary and Peru, among others.
